These crimes can have a  serious impact of the life and development of a child, and can continue  to impact the survivor later in life. Learning the warning signs of  child sexual abuse is often the first step to protecting a child that is  in danger. If you can spot sexual abuse, you can stop it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Signs that a child may have been sexually abused<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not always easy to spot sexual abuse because perpetrators often  take steps to hide their actions. Some signs are easier to spot than  others. For instance, some warning signs might be noticed by a caretaker  or parent, and are often red flags that the child needs medical  attention. Listen to your instincts. If you notice something that isn\u2019t  right or someone is making you uncomfortable\u2014even if you can\u2019t put your  finger on why\u2014it\u2019s important to <a href=\"http:\/\/myunheardvoice.org\/ru\/if-you-suspect-a-child-is-being-harmed\/\">talk to the child<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Physical warning signs:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)<\/li><li>Signs of trauma to the genital area, such as unexplained bleeding, bruising, or blood on the sheets<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Behavioral signs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Sexual behavior that is inappropriate for the child\u2019s age<\/li><li>Bedwetting or soiling the bed, if the child has already outgrown these behaviors<\/li><li>Not wanting to be left alone with certain people or being afraid to \nbe away from primary caregivers, especially if this is a new behavior<\/li><li>Tries to avoid removing clothing to change or bathe<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Emotional signs:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Excessive talk about or knowledge of sexual topics<\/li><li>Resuming behaviors that they had grown out of, such as thumbsucking<\/li><li>Nightmares or fear of being alone at night<\/li><li>Excessive worry or fearfulness<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Signs that an adult may be hurting a child<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Keeping children safe can be challenging since many perpetrators who \nsexually abuse children are in positions of trust\u201493 percent of child \nsexual assault victims know the perpetrator.<sup>2<\/sup> Keeping a child\n away from the perpetrator may mean major changes in your own life, even\n if you are outside of the child\u2019s family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be cautious of an adult who spend time with children and exhibits the following behaviors:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Does not respect boundaries or listen when someone tells them \u201cno\u201d<\/li><li>Engages in touching that a child or child\u2019s parents\/guardians have indicated is unwanted<\/li><li>Tries to be a child\u2019s friend rather than filling an adult role in the child\u2019s life<\/li><li>Does not seem to have age-appropriate relationships<\/li><li>Talks with children about their personal problems or relationships<\/li><li>Spends time alone with children outside of their role in the child\u2019s life or makes up excuses to be alone with the child<\/li><li>Expresses unusual interest in child\u2019s sexual development, such as \ncommenting on sexual characteristics or sexualizing normal behaviors<\/li><li>Gives a child gifts without occasion or reason<\/li><li>Spends a lot of time with your child or another child you know<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Taking action isn\u2019t easy, but it\u2019s important<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not always easy to identify child sexual abuse\u2014and it can be  even more challenging to step in if you suspect something isn\u2019t right.  If a child tells you that someone makes them uncomfortable, even if they  can\u2019t tell you anything specific, listen. Talk to someone who can help  you figure out if this is something that must be reported, such as a  staff member from your local sexual assault service provider.
