There are \nmany different ways that you can step in or make a difference if you see\n someone at risk. This approach to preventing sexual assault is referred\n to as \u201cbystander intervention.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How can I play a role in preventing sexual assault?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The key to keeping your friends \nsafe is learning how to intervene in a way that fits the situation and \nyour comfort level. Having this knowledge on hand can give you the \nconfidence to step in when something isn\u2019t right. Stepping in can make \nall the difference, but it should never put your own safety at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Create a distraction<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\nDo what you can to interrupt the situation. A distraction can give the person at risk a chance to get to a safe place.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Cut off the conversation with a \ndiversion like, \u201cLet\u2019s get pizza, I\u2019m starving,\u201d or \u201cThis party is lame.\n Let\u2019s try somewhere else.\u201d<\/li><li>Bring out fresh food or drinks and offer them to everyone at the party, including the people you are concerned about.<\/li><li>Start an activity that is draws other people in, like a game, a debate, or a dance party.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Ask directly<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Talk directly to the person who might be in trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Ask questions like \u201cWho did you come here with?\u201d or \u201cWould you like me to stay with you?\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Refer to an authority<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes the safest way to intervene is to refer to a neutral party \nwith the authority to change the situation, like an RA or security \nguard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Talk to a security guard, bartender, or \nanother employee about your concerns. It\u2019s in their best interest to \nensure that their patrons are safe, and they will usually be willing to \nstep in.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t hesitate to call 911 if you are concerned for someone else\u2019s safety.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Enlist others<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be intimidating to approach a situation alone. Enlist another person to support you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Ask someone to come with you to approach\n the person at risk. When it comes to expressing concern, sometimes \nthere is power in numbers.<\/li><li>Ask someone to intervene in your place. For example, you could ask \nsomeone who knows the person at risk to escort them to the bathroom.<\/li><li>Enlist the friend of the person you\u2019re concerned about. \u201cYour friend\n looks like they\u2019ve had a lot to drink. Can you check on them?\u201d<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Your actions matter <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether or not you were able to change the outcome, by stepping in \nyou are helping to change the way people think about their role in \npreventing sexual assault.
