Of victims under the age of 18: 34% of victims of sexual assault and rape are under age 12, and 66% of victims\u00a0of sexual assault and rape are age class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>One in 9 girls and 1 in 53 boys under the age of 18 experience sexual abuse or assault at the hands of an adult.<sup>3<\/sup><\/li>\r\n<li>82% of all victims under 18 are female.<sup>4<\/sup><\/li>\r\n<li>Females ages 16-19 are 4 times more likely than the general population to be victims of rape, attempted rape, or sexual assault.<sup>2<\/sup><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The effects of child sexual abuse can be long-lasting and affect the victim&#8217;s mental health. Victims are more likely than non-victims to experience the following mental health challenges:<sup>5 <\/sup><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>About 4 times more likely to develop symptoms of drug abuse<\/li>\r\n<li>About 4 times more likely to experience PTSD as adults<\/li>\r\n<li>About 3 times more likely to experience a major depressive episode as adults<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-dots\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Perpetrators of Child Sexual Abuse Are Often Related to the Victim<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"wp-image-167\" src=\"http:\/\/myunheardvoice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/9-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/myunheardvoice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/9-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/myunheardvoice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/9-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/myunheardvoice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/9-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/myunheardvoice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/9-260x146.png 260w, https:\/\/myunheardvoice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/9-50x28.png 50w, https:\/\/myunheardvoice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/9-133x75.png 133w, https:\/\/myunheardvoice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/9-1200x675.png 1200w, https:\/\/myunheardvoice.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/9.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width:767px) 480px, (max-width:1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Out of the yearly 63,000 sexual abuse cases substantiated,\u00a0or found strong evidence,\u00a0by Child Protective Services (CPS),<sup>6<\/sup> the perpetrator was most often the parent:<sup>1<\/sup>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>80% of perpetrators were a parent<\/li>\r\n<li>6% were other relatives<\/li>\r\n<li>5% were &#8220;other&#8221; (from siblings to strangers)<\/li>\r\n<li>4% were unmarried partners of a parent<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<li>Out of the sexual abuse cases reported to CPS in 2013, 47,000 men and 5,000 women were the alleged perpetrators.<sup>6<\/sup><\/li>\r\n<li>In 88% of the sexual abuse claims that CPS substantiates or finds supporting evidence of, the perpetrator is male. In 9% of cases they are female, and 3% are unknown.<sup>6<\/sup><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-dots\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Perpetrators of Sexual Violence Often Know the Victim<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" class=\"wp-image-168\" children and teen victims know the perpetrator.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>Of sexual abuse cases reported to law enforcement, 93% of juvenile victims knew the perpetrator:<sup>2<\/sup>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>59% were acquaintances<\/li>\r\n<li>34%\u00a0were family members<\/li>\r\n<li>7% \u00a0were strangers to the victim<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Victims of sexual violence who are incarcerated are most likely to be assaulted by jail or prison staff.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>In jail or prison, 60% of all sexual violence against inmates is perpetrated by the institution\u2019s staff.<sup>4<\/sup><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-dots\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Perpetrators<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-dots\" \/>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sexual Violence Can Have Long-Term Effects on Victims<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The likelihood that a person suffers suicidal or depressive thoughts increases after sexual violence.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>94% of women who are raped experience symptoms of\u00a0post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)\u00a0during the two weeks following the rape.<sup>9<\/sup><\/li>\r\n<li>30% of women report symptoms of\u00a0PTSD\u00a09 months after the rape.<sup>10 <\/sup><\/li>\r\n<li>33% of women who are raped contemplate suicide.<sup>11<\/sup><\/li>\r\n<li>13% of women who are raped attempt suicide.<sup>11<\/sup><\/li>\r\n<li>Approximately 70% of rape or sexual assault victims experience moderate to severe distress, a larger percentage than for any other violent crime.<sup>12<\/sup><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>People who have been sexually assaulted are more likely to use drugs than the general public.<sup>11<\/sup><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>3.4 times more likely to use marijuana<\/li>\r\n<li>6 times more likely to use cocaine<\/li>\r\n<li>10 times more likely to use other major drugs<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Sexual violence also affects victims\u2019 relationships with their family, friends, and co-workers.<sup>12<\/sup><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li>38% of victims of sexual violence experience work or school problems, which can include significant problems with a boss, coworker, or peer.<\/li>\r\n<li>37% experience family\/friend problems, including getting into arguments more frequently than before, not feeling able to trust their family\/friends, or not feeling as close to them as before the crime.<\/li>\r\n<li>84% of survivors who were victimized by an intimate partner experience professional or emotional issues, including moderate to severe
